The OnePlus 7 Po is not only a top smartphone, which offers for around 700 euros the same specifiations, which otherwise only a devices of the 1000-euro class have, in some disciplines it also passes the nobel competition. We have tried out, if the China-Phone maybe even the new number 1.
Five years ago, OnePlus introduced its first flagship killer. For just 300 euros, the device had a hardware equipment like that offered only the top Android smartphones from Samsung, HTC or Sony for more than twice as much money. At that time, however, the OnePlus was hard to come by and was not a real threat to established high-end manufacturers. This has changed over the years and today’s smart phone elite feels the hot breath of the challenger in the neck. With the OnePlus 7 Pro, the former underdog now even wants to top the smartphones. We tried, if the device has what it takes.
Above all, the OnePlus 7 Pro differs from its predecessors in one respect: the camera equipment is no longer supposed to be almost as good as the top of a smartphone, but at least at eye level. However, that has its price and so pushes the OnePlus 7 Pro in regions beyond the 700 euros and is thus not much cheaper than the Huawei P30 Pro or the Samsung Galaxy S10. If the challenger’s cameras could not keep up, the OnePlus 7 Pro would be doomed to failure. But that is not the case, the Chinese can deliver.
The camera doesn’t even stop at night
The smartphone has a 48-megapixel main camera on the back, which is equipped with a bright f / 1.6 aperture, a large sensor (0.5 inches) and optical image stabilizer. It is complemented by a telephoto lens (f / 2.4) with triple magnification, which is also optically stabilized and a 16-megapixel ultra wide-angle camera (f / 2.2).
The images of the main camera are very detailed in normal lighting conditions and shine with crisp contrasts and strong, but natural colors. One may expect that from the middle class today. The OnePlus 7 Pro also joins the few smartphones that deliver amazing results not only at dusk but also at night. Maybe the photos are slightly weaker in detail than the Huawei P30 Pro or the current Pixel devices. But large differences in quality are not visible to the naked eye. Respect.
In portraits succeed with the OnePlus 7 Pro also pretty shots with a successful artificial bokeh. With fine transitions and in the gradations, the P30 Pro with its TOF sensor here but slightly ahead.
4K videos at 60 fps
A similarly effective intelligent scene recognition as in Huawei does not offer the 7 Pro, is photographed a face, for example, the camera does not switch to portrait mode. The integrated Google Lens recognizes but among other names or addresses on business cards and can read QR codes.
The pictures of the ultra-wide-angle camera look good, but show a few pixel weaknesses at the edges. Unfortunately, a macro function like the P30 Pro is missing and also with the telephoto lens OnePlus has to surrender with a triple magnification to the five times the zoom of the P30 Pro.
Overall, the triple camera but on a very high level and landed not in vain with the specialists from DxOMark with the top score of 111 points just behind Huawei’s number 1 in second place. The individual results of the test are not yet known, the OnePlus 7 Pro could have spotted but also with his videos vigorously. They make a very good impression, especially at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second.
Pop-up camera in the frame
Usually, the selfie camera is rather a minor matter. But with the OnePlus 7 Pro she is a real eye-catcher, although you do not even see her. She only drives out when needed and hides otherwise in the frame. This works well and the small pops seems pretty solid. Their mechanism has been tested more than 300,000 times, according to OnePlus, and it’s guaranteed to last five years if used 150 times a day. Because she is extended but quite vulnerable, she has a protective mechanism. The device detects a fall over its sensors and automatically retracts the camera in the event of a fall.
Dust should also be able to harm her. This also applies to the entire device, where the emphasis is on „should“. OnePlus says and demonstrates that the 7 Pro is protected against the ingress of water and dust, but there is no certification and therefore no warranty.
Thanks to the pop-up camera, the device needs neither a recess nor a hole in the display, which means that the magnificent 6.7-inch AMOLED screen takes up almost the entire front except for a very narrow edge. The panel made by Samsung supports HDR10 + and shines with strong contrasts, natural colors and a significant luminosity for its technology. With a pixel density of 516 ppi, the display is crisp and sharp and a refresh rate of 90 hertz makes all movements look wonderfully fluid.
But the OnePlus 7 Pro is not only jagged, the device is actually fast as an arrow. Stronger is currently no other Android smartphone equipped. It is powered by Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 855 top processor, which can access 6, 8 or even 12 gigabytes (GB) of RAM. In addition, the 7 Pro is the first smartphone internally equipped with UFS 3.0 memory (ROM), which allows higher write speeds than the memory used in other top smartphones. System: Android 9

Even the fingerprint sensor is fast
An interface with USB 3.1 (1st generation) is also fitting behind the USB-C port. And while the new fingerprint sensor under the display works optically, as in the predecessor 6T, it now reacts almost without delay.
The battery also fits. It holds 4000 milliamp hours and keeps the device running well for one and a half days or even longer in normal use. Even with heavier duty, you do not usually have to worry about running out of steam in the evening. If necessary, an empty battery is full again in less than 30 minutes via „Warp Charge 30“, whereby the Charger and not the Smartphone gets warm in the OnePlus technology. The smartphone has liquid cooling on board to prevent overheating even in very demanding games.
Head-to-head race with P30 Pro
Because it does not allow any weaknesses, from the telephony to the nicely simple user interface to the connectivity, the OnePlus 7 Pro is definitely one of the best smartphones you can buy. Whether or not the P30 Pro can go beyond that depends on personal preferences. Huawei’s flagship camera offers the slightly better overall package, the OnePlus Pro 7 has the edge in terms of performance. Although the differences in online trading are not that big anymore, the challenger also offers the better price. In the basic configuration with 6 GB RAM and 128 GB ROM, the OnePlus 7 Pro costs about 710 Euro, with 8 and 265 GB 760 Euro and in the version with 12/256 GB 830 Euro.
