The OnePlus Nord is the smartphone that we had to wait a long time for from the Chinese manufacturer. While the top models became more and more expensive, customers who wanted a cheap and good Android smartphone from OnePlus fell by the wayside. The OnePlus Nord fulfills all our wishes - and more. At a price of 399 euros , the OnePlus Nord is a really good purchase. Choosing an upper mid-range processor and foregoing some features to lower the price is absolutely correct. You get an affordable cell phone with a good camera, high performance, long battery life, a 90 Hertz AMOLED display, a very good Android operating system and 5G future security. You can't expect more in the price range.
The OnePlus Nord looks good. It has thin frames around the AMOLED display. The two front cameras are embedded in the upper left corner. The model in "Blue Marble" was made available to us for the test. A really nice and eye-catching color, underlined by a shiny frame. For those who like it more subtle, the smartphone is also available in "Onyx Gray". The phone is, as you are used to from OnePlus, perfectly processed. The plastic frame alone doesn't quite match the flawless look. A metal frame would be better and more resistant - as it turned out . Fortunately, OnePlus includes a transparent cover. Optionally, there are also other covers made of other materials available for purchase.
Although the OnePlus Nord costs so little, the company does not do without an AMOLED panel or the 90 Hertz refresh rate. The display is very good. With the Full HD + resolution of 2,400 x 1,080 pixels and a diagonal of 6.44 inches, it looks very sharp and absolutely sufficient for all activities. The panel reacts quickly and you notice a clear difference to other cheap smartphones that only use a 60 Hertz panel or do without OLED. We already have a little criticism of the display. It could be a little lighter. The display is difficult to read outdoors and in strong sunlight. The OnePlus 8 Pro is visibly brighter.
OnePlus installs a single speaker on the underside in the north. The sound is okay, even if music seems a bit flat and lacks bass. The position on the bottom is not optimal. You cover the speaker too lightly and then you have almost no sound. A stereo loudspeaker would be the solution, but was probably no longer included due to the low price. Maybe with the successor.
Although OnePlus "only" installs the Snapdragon 765G, this smartphone is one of the fastest Android phones on the market. We owe this to the OxygenOS based on Android 10. The phone feels faster in normal use than my Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus, which I have been using for some time. OnePlus has also optimized the software so that it could even be described as the better Android. In fact, I only miss one thing: the ability to change the order of the on-screen buttons. Everything else is there.
The OnePlus Nord software offers many setting options. You can let off steam and customize the cell phone in the way that you find best for yourself. You have full access to the Google Play Store and can therefore install all important apps. With 128 or 256 GB of internal memory, there is also enough space for this. However, the memory cannot be expanded.
The camera of the OnePlus Nord comes from the OnePlus 8. The image quality is convincing. In particular, the optical image stabilizer on the 48 MP main camera ensures that photos are almost always in focus. You get some variability through the super wide angle and the macro camera. A depth sensor is installed as the fourth camera. This measures the distance to the respective objects. A 32 MP main camera and an 8 MP super wide angle are integrated into the display at the front. The image quality is also convincing here. Below are some photos that we took with the OnePlus Nord in different lighting situations.
OnePlus could still add more in low-light situations. The night mode makes the picture a little better, but not really much. The macro camera also needs a lot of light.
The OnePlus Nord is equipped with a 4,115 mAh battery that can be recharged fairly quickly. In combination with the economical processor and AMOLED display with Full HD + resolution, the runtime is very good. In normal operation you can easily reach two days. With intensive use, it is still over a day. I only tested in Telekom's WiFi and LTE network. The runtime in the 5G network is likely to be somewhat shorter. Unfortunately, I couldn't try it out.
